Inspiring HOPE with a Haircut
Since 1954, Open Door Mission has been committed to meeting the unique and complex needs of men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and poverty. This wouldn’t be possible without a large community of generous supporters who selflessly offer their time, talents, and treasures.
One of our most familiar volunteers on campus is Donna. For years, she has faithfully committed her time and talents to Open Door Mission by providing free haircuts at the Garland Thompson Menu’s Center. For many men, this is the first haircut they’ve received in months, some even years. Though a haircut may seem insignificant to some, it can provide a sense of normalcy and confidence that can make all the difference for those experiencing homelessness and poverty. One guest, Tom, still remembers the first time Donna cut his hair.
“For me and a lot of guys it’s about self-esteem. I always kept my hair short, and before I got here it had grown out quite a bit,” Tom remembers. “After she finished it, I felt like the old me again. I felt like the man I was supposed to be. It was just a really good feeling.”
Along with hairdressing, Donna also has a knack for lifting others’ spirits. Each week, she can be found striking up conversations and brightening the days of guests and students at the Garland Thompson Menu2019s Center.
Tom adds, “Even when I don’t get a haircut, just talking to Donna makes my day. She is truly a blessing to Open Door Mission, and I know there a lot of guys that feel that way.”
We are so grateful for Donna, and many others like her that have chosen to join us in meeting the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. Thank you for breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty at Open Door Mission.
